Atmospheric CO2 Consumption by Continential Erosion

The Continental Atmospheric CO2 Consumption data set represents gridded estimates for the riverine export of carbon and of sediments based on empirical models. All data exist for the overall continental area in a spatial resolution of 0.5 x 0.5 degree longitude/ latitude. The units are tC/km2/yr for all carbon species, and t/km2/yr for sediment fluxes. On the whole, five data sets are available: dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export (cont_flux_doc_hd_map.asc), particulate organic carbon (POC) export (cont_flux_poc_hd_map.asc), bicarbonate export (cont_flux_hco3_hd_map.asc), export of bicarbonate being of atmospheric origin (also called "atmospheric CO2 consumption by rock weathering", which is identical to the previous data set, except for the weathering of carbonate rocks, where only half of the carbon is of atmospheric origin) (cont_flux_co2rw_hd_map.asc), and sediment export (cont_flux_tss_hd_map.asc).

This data set is related to the Global River Fluxes of Carbon and Sediments to the Oceans data set.

File Information

The Continental data files come in two resolutions: half-degree (hd) with 720 values per line and 360 lines, and one-degree (1d) with 360 values per line and 180 lines. The files are all in ASCII format with a simgle space separating the values. Oceanic grid points are represented by -99. The part of the continents which are covered by ice have specific carbon and sediment fluxes of 0. The files have been compressed using the PKZip program. Each uncompressed file contains space-delimited ASCII text.
