Vegetation Data

Potential Vegetation

This data set was developed to describe the state of the global land cover before alteration by humans. It forms a complement to the historical croplands data set developed by Ramankutty and Foley (1999). By overlaying the two, one can determine the extent to which natural vegetation has been cleared for cultivation. This data set can be used directly within spatially-explicit climate and biogeochemical models.

Data Provider: Navin Ramankutty and Jonathan A. Foley

File Information

There are two scales of data: 1-degree and half-degree. Each 1-degree file contains ASCII text with 360 values per line and 180 lines of data; one line for each degree of latitude. Each pixel represents an 1 by 1 degree cell. Each half-degree file contains ASCII text with 720 values per line and 360 lines of data; one line for each half-degree of latitude. Each pixel represents an 0.5 by 0.5 degree cell. Each line is terminated by a newline character. Each number in the file represents a Vegetation Class for that cell. These Class Numbers are listed below.

Class #Biome Type
1Tropical Evergreen Forest/Woodland
2Tropical Deciduous Forest/Woodland
3Temperate Broadleaf Evergreen Forest/Woodland
4Temperate Needleleaf Evergreen Forest/Woodland
5Temperate Deciduous Forest/Woodland
6Boreal Evergreen Forest/Woodland
7Boreal Deciduous Forest/Woodland
8Mixed Forest
9Savanna
10Grassland/Steppe
11Dense Shrubland
12Open Shrubland
13Tundra
14Desert
15Polar desert/Rock/Ice
